Honourable Presidents and

Esteemed members of the Community Councils,

Why go to war?  Is the sacrifice worth it?

 

The Second World War caused the deaths of over 39 million lives.  The unestimated material cost was three million dollars.  This war caused environmental damage of biblical proportions.  All of humanity was blanketed in pain and suffering caused by stress and the grief of losing family and friends.  Millions of people were scarred by both physical and mental wounds and illnesses that still afflict many even today.  This war proved that man is capable of being the most fearsome and the worst beast upon earth. 

I sometimes wonder and ask myself, with so much catastrophe and damage that cannot even be described or even contemplated,  was this war necessary?  The answer is no.  What was the result of this war?  All of humanity suffered greatly and those responsible for it ended up damaging their political reputations and personal interests.  

If only logic and calm tempers had prevailed;  if only the authors of this war had the fear of God;  if only they did not have pride and were not selfish; if only they were not hungry for control;  if only they did not crave power and authority;  if only they truly loved freedom for themselves and others;  if only they respected the sovereignty of the Creator over all creation;  if only they had some semblance of humility:  this war would never have occurred.  But unfortunately, it did. 

What could Hellas do:  a country that was great in glorious accomplishments, but small in size, population and military power and personnel?  It had the difficult choice of either capitulating to the stronger power and existing as a vassal state in virtual bondage, or to sacrifice itself for the honoured pursuit of freedom.  It chose the latter and it could not do otherwise.  Unfortunately 530,000 Greeks were sacrificed in the defense of their motherland. 

The Greek Armed Forces manifested untold valour and unsurpassed love of country, bravery and self-sacrifice.  Their heroic feats on the battle-field were such that Churchill exclaimed:  “From now on, we will not say that the Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like the Greeks!”  Our Armed Forces added golden pages of military victories and bravery to the annals and history of our race.  They assisted greatly in influencing the outcome of the war.  Their sacrifices are truly a great offering to all humanity. 

The Second World War was not necessary and did not need to occur.  War in general should not occur.  All contentious issues must be settled through dialogue and all problems solved through cooperation and the prevailing of logic and temperance.  Unfortunately, there are leaders in the world who are madmen and crave fame, power and glory at any cost.  They and their illogical desires are the causes of such wars.  It would be better if there were a deterrent to such madmen by having one authority that would not allow such unbalanced and unpredictable leaders to plunge all of humanity in the chaos and frenzy of war. Perhaps the United Nations should have more power and authority to accomplish this goal.  Even if this could happen, what can one do with fanatic terrorists who sprout up everywhere?  There are not enough lunatic asylums in the world to house and rehabilitate such mad men.  By the time they are identified and revealed, they have done their damage. 

Hellenes everywhere rightly celebrate the heroism and the sacrifices of their parents and siblings in 1940.  We owe them our debt of gratitude and we are called to honour their memories in remembrance and prayers.  We must promise them that we will always be equally worthy of their sacrifices.  Let us live peacefully and always strive for peace.  We must always be prepared to sacrifice ourselves at any time for peace and freedom.

May God grant eternal rest and repose amongst the righteous to all of our heroic parents and brethren who lost their lives to defend their families and motherland.  May the leaders of the world be given a spirit of sobriety, logic, humility and a desire for peace, so that all people may live in peace and tranquility.

Πρός τί ὁ πόλεμος. Ἀξίζει ἡ θυσία του;

 

   Ὁ Β΄ Παγκόσµιος Πόλεµος ἐστοίχισε στήν ἀνθρωπότητα 38 ἑκατοµµύρια ζωές. Ἀνυπολόγιστα τρισεκατοµµύρια δολάρια. Ἔκαµε βιβλική καταστροφή στό περιβάλλον. Ἐβύθισε στόν πόνο, στό ἄγχος καί στό πένθος ὁλόκληρη τήν ἀνθρωπότητα. Ἄφησε ἑκατοµµύρια ἀνθρώπων µέ σωµατικά και ψυχικά τραύµατα πού ὑποφέρουν µέχρι καί σήµερα ἀκόµη. Ἀπέδειξε, ὅτι ὁ ἄνθρωπος γίνεται τό ἀγριώτερο θηρίο τῆς γῆς. 

Μέ τόσες καταστροφές καί ἄλλες πού δέν περιγράφονται, διερωτᾶται κανείς. Ἔπρεπε νά γίνει αὐτός ὁ πόλεµος; Ἡ ἀπάντηση εἶναι ὄχι. Ἀλλά δυστυχῶς ἔγινε. Ὁλόκληρη ἡ ἀνθρωπότης ἀλλά καί οἱ ὑπεύθυνοι τοῦ πολέµου ἐβγῆκαν πολύ ζηµιωµένοι ἀπό αὐτόν τόν πόλεµο. 

Ἄν εἶχε ἐπικρατήσει λογική καί ψυχραιµία. Ἄν οἱ δηµιουργοί τοῦ πολέµου εἶχαν φόβο Θεοῦ. Ἄν δέν εἶχαν ἐγωισµό καί φιλαυτία. Ἄν δέν εἶχαν ἀρχοµανία. Ἄν δέν ἐπιζητοῦσαν τή δύναµη καί τήν ἐξουσία. Ἄν πραγµατικά ἀγαποῦσαν τήν ἐλευθερία τους καί τήν ἐλευθερία ὅλων τῶν ἄλλων. Ἄν ἀνεγνώριζαν τήν κυριαρχία τοῦ Δηµιουργοῦ ἐπί τῆς δηµιουργίας. Ἄν εἶχαν λίγη ταπείνωση, ὁ πόλεµος δέν θά γινόταν. Ἀλλά ἔγινε. 

Τί µποροῦσε νά κάµει ἡ µεγάλη σέ δόξα ἀλλά µικρή σέ ἔκταση, πληθυσµό καί στρατιωτικές δυνάµεις Ἑλλάδα; Νά ὑποδουλωθεῖ ἤ νά θυσιασθεῖ γιά τήν ἐλευθερία της; Προτίµησε τό δεύτερο καί καλά ἔκανε. Θυσιάστηκαν ὅµως 530 χιλιάδες ἀπό τά παιδιά της.  

Οἱ στρατιωτικές µας δυνάµεις ἔδειξαν ἀπαράµιλλη φιλοπατρία. Γενναιότητα καί αὐτοθυσία.  Ὁ ἡρωισµός τους ἦταν τέτοιος πού ἔκαµε τόν Churchil νά λέει:  

«Ἀπό τώρα καί στό ἑξῆς, δέ θά λέµε ὅτι οἱ Ἕλληνες πολεµοῦν σάν ἥρωες, ἀλλά ὅτι οἱ ἥρωες πολεµοῦν σάν Ἕλληνες». Ἔγραψαν χρυσές σελίδες στήν ἱστορία τοῦ Ἔθνους. Ἐβοήθησαν τά µέγιστα γιά τήν ἔκβαση τοῦ πολέµου. Ἡ θυσία τους εἶναι µεγάλη προσφορά στήν ἀνθρωπότητα. 

Ὁ Β’ Παγκόσµιος Πόλεµος δέν ἔπρεπε νά γίνει. Καί κάθε πόλεµος δέν πρέπει νά γίνεται. Ὅλα τά θέµατα πρέπει νά διευθετοῦνται καί ὅλα τά προβλήµατα νά λύνονται µέ λογική καί συνεργασία. Δυστυχῶς ὅµως, ὑπάρχουν ἄνθρωποι παράλογοι καί φιλόδοξοι καί γίνονται αἰτία τῶν πολέµων. Καλόν θά ἦταν νά ὑπάρχει µία δύναµη νά µήν ἐπιτρέπει σ’ αὐτούς τούς παράλογους νά ρίχνουν τήν ἀνθρωπότητα σ’ αὐτό τό χάος τοῦ πολέµου. Ἴσως νά ἔπρεπε νά ἔχει περισσότερη δύναµη ὁ Ὀργανισµός Ἡνωµένων Ἐθνῶν. Ἀλλά καί πάλι τί µπορεῖς νά κάµεις µέ τούς φανατικούς τροµοκράτες οἱ ὁποῖοι ξεφυτρώνουν παντοῦ; Δέν ὑπάρχουν ἀρκετά φρενοκοµεῖα γιά νά χωρέσουν τούς φρενοβλαβεῖς τροµοκράτες καί µέχρι νά τούς πάρεις εἴδηση, αὐτοί ἔχουν κάµει τή ζηµιά τους. 

Ὁ ἀπανταχοῦ Ἑλληνισµός δίκαια γιορτάζει τόν ἡρωισµό καί τή θυσία τοῦ 1940. Ἀποτίοµε φόρο τιµῆς στή µνήµη τῶν ἡρωικῶν γονιῶν µας καί ἀδελφῶν µας. Ὑποσχόµαστε νά εἴµαστε πάντοτε ἀντάξιοι τῆς θυσίας τους. Νά ζοῦµε εἰρηνικά καί νά ἐργαζόµαστε γιά τήν εἰρήνη. Νά εἴµαστε ἕτοιµοι νά θυσιαστοῦµε ἀνά πᾶσα στιγµή γιά τήν εἰρήνη καί τήν ἐλευθερία. 

Εἴθε ὁ Θεός νά ἀναπαύει µεταξύ τῶν Ἁγίων τούς ἥρωες γονεῖς µας καί ἀδέλφια µας. Νά δίδει λογική καί ταπείνωση καί πνεῦµα εἰρήνης στούς ἀρχηγούς τῶν Ἐθνῶν, ὥστε ὁλόκληρη ἡ ἀνθρωπότης νά ἔχει εἰρήνη.
