The Letter of Condolence of His Eminence Metropolitan Archbishop Sotirios to His Grace Bishop Iov, Patriarchal Administrator for Canada reads as follows:
His Grace Bishop IOV Patriarchal Russian Orthodox Administrator of Canada 10812 108th Street Edmonton, AB T5H 3A6
Beloved Brother in Christ,
The 350,000 Orthodox Christians, members of our Holy Metropolis, share in your pain and that of the faithful under your omophorion in the falling asleep of His Beatitude Patriarch Alexy II. Indeed he was a man of God and a worker for Christ’s Church under very difficult circumstances. I feel that he has rendered his duties properly and I am sure he has been welcomed by our Lord in Heaven with the words, “well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord.”
I was in Vancouver and I had a memorial service for the repose of his soul and will continue to pray for him and for all of you. Please pray for me.
May the Prince of Peace who is coming to be born again bring peace and comfort to all of you.

Upon hearing of the death of Pte.
Demetrios Diplaros, His Eminence Metropolitan Archbishop Sotirios issued the
following statement:
Private Demetrios Diplaros, a young man of principles, died in Afghanistan together with his colleagues Corporal Mark McLaren and Warrant Officer Robert John Wilson, fighting for peace and reconciliation in that country. We share the pain of the families. They and their families are faithful and believe in the afterlife. We pray and believe that they are closer to our Lord as they were faithful young men and died for a good cause. Friday December 12th, I will preside over Demetrios Diplaros’ funeral service and I ask everyone to join in prayers for the repose of his soul and for the comfort of his father Argyrios, his mother Kathy and his grandmother Martha and all his relatives. We and all Canadians are indebted to them. May their memories be eternal!
