Camp Met Winnipeg Teaches Faith & Fun!

 

The Greek Orthodox Community of St. Demetrios, Winnipeg, provides a place where youth can go and enjoy the great outdoors, fellowship with friends, good food and spiritual guidance. Camp Metamorphosis, or Camp Met as it is more affectionately called, has been a program of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Canada for quite some time now. However, it is only recently that Winnipeg has adopted this name and format for their long running camp. Rev. Fr. Theodore Paraskevopoulos, one of the founders of Camp Met Toronto, has facilitated the transition of Winnipeg’s “Greek Camp” to “Camp Met Winnipeg.”

Fr. Ted said, “The previous camp here was more focused on culture and heritage. We restructured the program along Toronto’s lines to include, not only Greek tradition, but also Orthodox spirituality, fellowship and prayer.” The camp, like the one in Toronto, is one week long and held in Gimli, MB, along the shores of Lake Winnipeg. It is a beautiful campsite owned by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, thus providing a small Orthodox chapel on the grounds as well. Daily activities include sports, arts & crafts, music & Greek culture, Orthodox Life, morning and evening prayer services and aquatics. There are also a wide range of night activities such as karaoke and camp fires.

“This year we had a 90% increase in new campers who had never come here before” says Jim Dafnis, Camp Administrator. He continues, “This means that a fresh new generation of kids will be learning their faith and making new connections at camp.” With more than 30 volunteer staff, many local priests visiting and a wonderful camp board, Camp Met Winnipeg is sure to be a success year after year. Fr. Ted is optimistic; “We hope to see many more children here in the years to come. Camp is the most important ministry we can provide and it works wonders on our children.” For anyone who visits, the wonders can bee seen in the happy faces of the campers.

The Metropolis Purchases School in the City of Oshawa

Αγαπητοί εν Κυρίω,

Με πολλή χαρά γνωρίζω σε όλους τους Ελληνορθόδοξους της περιοχής Durham ότι η Ιερά μας Μητρόπολη αγόρασε στην πόλη της Οshawa, σχολείο το οποίον ευρίσκεται στο 399 Farewell Street, Oshawa, Ontario. Το σχολείο αυτό είναι σε προνομιακή τοποθεσία. Το οικόπεδό του είναι 24 στρέμματα. Το κτίριο είναι 3,200 τετρ. μέτρα. Έχει 16 μεγάλες αίθουσες διδασκαλίας. Γυμναστήριο. Βιβλιοθήκη. Γραφεία και άλλους πολλούς βοηθητικούς χώρους.

            Η Ιερά μας Μητρόπολη θα χρησιμοποιήσει τους χώρους αυτούς για Ημερήσιο Σχολείο. Για Απογευματινό Σχολείο. Για Παιδικούς Σταθμούς. Για Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο (αίθουσα δείπνων και δεξιώσεων) και φυσικά για Ιερό Ναό.

            Το σχολείο αυτό είναι ένα πολύτιμο απόκτημα της Ιεράς μας Μητρόπολης, το οποίον τώρα αλλά και στο μέλλον περισσότερο θα έχει πολύ μεγάλη αξία. Τα τρία τέταρτα του σχολείου είναι νεόκτιστα. Η Ιερά Μητρόπολη πριν το αγοράσει έκαμε όλες τις απαραίτητες εξετάσεις για το περιβάλλον και όλα είναι εντάξει. Θα εξυπηρετήσει όλους τους Ελληνορθόδοξους της περιοχής Durham (Durham Region) και το Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο θα υπηρετήσει και  μη Ελληνορθοδόξους.

            Με την παρούσα μου, καλώ όλους τους Ελληνορθοδόξους της περιοχής Durham (Durham Region) να ξεχάσουν όλα τα παλιά, να δώσουν τα χέρια καί να συνεργαστούν απόλυτα ώστε ο Ελληνισμός της περιοχής αυτής να μεγαλουργήσει, τα παιδιά μας να διδαχθούν την Ελληνική γλώσσα, την Ορθοδοξία και τον Ελληνικό Πολιτισμό και έτσι να διαιωνίζεται η φυλή μας και η Ορθοδοξία. Να δοξάζεται το όνομα του Θεού και να σώζονται οι ψυχές των ανθρώπων.

            Σύντομα θα καλέσω σε συνεργασία τα Διοικητικά Συμβούλια της Αστικής και της Εκκλησιαστικής Κοινότητας για να συνεργαστούμε όλοι μαζί για το συμφέρον του Ελληνισμού. Η αγορά του σχολείου αυτού εκόστισε στην Ιερά μας Μητρόπολη, μέ όλα τα έξοδα για τις μελέτες, περίπου 2,200,000.00 δολάρια. Για να κτιστεί σήμερα ένα τέτοιο κτίριο χρειάζονται μόνο για το κτίσιμο 4,500.000.00 και επί πλέον 1,000.000.00 για το οικόπεδο.

            Παρακαλώ τον Τρισάγιο Θεό να ευλογεί όλους σας και να σας χαρίζει πλουσιοπάροχα τα αγαθά  Του.

Beloved in the Lord,

 It is with much joy that I inform all of the Greek Orthodox faithful of Durham Region that our Metropolis has purchased a school in the city of Oshawa, which is located at 399 Farewell Street, Oshawa, Ontario. The school is in a prime location. The property is 5.61 acres. The building is 32,000 sq. feet. It has 16 large classrooms, a gym, library, offices and other useful spaces.

            Our Metropolis will use these spaces for a Day School, an afternoon school, a day care and a Cultural Centre (dining and reception hall) and, naturally, a Church.

            This school is a precious acquisition which now and more so in the future, will have a great value. Three-quarters (¾) of the school building is newly-built. The Metropolis, prior to purchasing the school, completed all the essential environmental tests and everything is okay. It will serve all of the Greek Orthodox faithful of Durham Region and the Cultural Centre will serve non-Greeks as well.

            With this letter, I call upon all of the Greek Orthodox faithful of Durham Region to forget the past, join forces and work together harmoniously in order for the Hellenism of this region to grow, our children be taught the Greek language, the Orthodox faith and Greek culture and that way to perpetuate our race and Orthodoxy so that peoples’ souls are saved and God’s name is glorified.

            Soon, I will call to cooperation the Boards of Directors of the Civic and the Ecclesiastical Communities, in order for everyone to work together for the good of all.

            The purchase of this school, including expenses, cost our Metropolis approximately $2.2 million. Only to build this building today would cost at least $4.5 million, plus $1 million for the land.

            I pray that the Thrice Holy God grant all of you all His blessings abundantly.
